Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana - 1797 Print E-mail
Mission San Fernando Rey de Espaņa was founded September 8, 1797 by Father Fermin Lasuen and named for St. Ferdinand, King of Spain (1217-1252).  In 1799 the first church was completed and the present church was completed in 1806.  The earthquake of 1812 damaged the mission. In 1934 the mission was secularized and 1946 it was sold. Returned to the church in 1861 but was in poor condition. Restoration were started in 1879, continued between 1912 to 1916 and again in the 1930s.  In 1974 the present church was replaced.
