Mission San Francisco de Asis was founded June 26th, 1776 by Padre Francisco Palou and named for St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Francisco order. In 1782 the present building was begun and dedicated nine years later in 1791. The mission was secularized in 1834 and in 1845 the mission lands were sold. In 1857, by presidential proclamation the property was returned to the mission.
