Mission San Juan Capistrano - 1775 Print E-mail
Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded October 30, 1775. The mission was originally established by Padre Laisuen, but abandoned because of trouble with the Indians.  Padre Junipero Serra refounded the mission on November 1, 1776, naming the mission for St. John of Capistrano an Italian theologian and inquisitor of the 14th century.  In 1796, the stone church was begun. Later the earthquake of 1812, destroyed the church. The mission was secularized in 1834 and sold in1845.  In 1865 the mission was returned to the Church.
