Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was founded June 13, 1798 by Father Fermin Lasuen and named for Louis IX, King of France (1215-1270). In 1811 the present church was begun; it was dedicated in 1815. In 1833 the mission was secularized and 1846 it was sold. The mission was abandoned in 1892 and returned to the church in 1865. In 1893 the mission was rededicated. Major reconstruction was begun immediately, and continues today.
