Mission San Rafael Arcangel - 1817 |

Mission San Rafael Arcángel was founded December 14, 1817 by Father Vicente de Sarria and named St. Raphael the Archangel, patron of good health. The mission was begun as a hospital asistencia for Delores. In 1818 the church was built. In 1923 it was accorded full mission status. In 1934 the mission was secularized and sold in 1841 to be abandoned a year later. In 1855 the mission was returned to the church. The mission buildings were abandoned and torn down in 1870 to be replaced be a new parish church. Many years later a replica of the original church was constructed.
