Mission Santa Barbara - 1786 Print E-mail
Mission Santa Barbara was founded December 4th, 1786 by Padre Lasuen and named for Saint Barbara. The third church was built in 1794, and was destroyed in the earthquake of 1812. The present church was begun in 1815. The first tower was completed in 1820 and a second tower added in 1831.  It collapsed a year later and was rebuilt in 1833.  The mission was secularized in 1834 and sold in 1846. It was returned to the church in 1865. The Mission Santa Barbara is the only mission never abandoned and in continuous use.
