Mission Santa Clara de Asis was founded January 12th, 1777 by Padre Junipero Serra and named for Saint Clare of Assisi, founder of the order "Poor Clares". The first log church was build in 1777, but replaced by a second log church in 1779 built near the Guadalupe River. Successive churches were built in 1784, 1819, culminating in the present church built in 1825. The mission was secularized in 1836 and transferred from the Franciscans to the Jesuits in 1851. The mission was remodeled in 1886. In 1926 the mission burned and was replaced three years later, in 1929.
