Mission Santa Inés was founded September 17, 1804 by Father Estevan Tapis and named for Saint Agnes. In 1817 the present building was dedicated. In 1836 the mission was secularized and 1844 - 1846 served as temporary headquarters for one of the first educational institutions in California, the College of our Lady of Refuge of Sinners. In 1846 it was sold. The mission returned to the church in 1862. In 1904 the new mission pastor began a 20 year labor of restoring the mission to much of its original splendor.
